Concerned about a Horse or Pony?

Being a small, volunteer based charity, unfortunately we do not have Field Officers or the powers to investigate, advise, enforce welfare laws or remove animals from situations where they may be at risk.  However you may report concerns to us and we will help where we can on (01489) 790982 or email@southantspony.org.uk

Welfare Issues

In cases where you are seriously concerned about an equine please contact either:

  • RSPCA on 08705 555999
  • or World Horse Welfare on 08000 480180

These are both large organisations which have the field officers and powers to enforce animal welfare law.

Loose Horses

If you are concerned about an animal(s), which are loose on a public highway or in a position to cause danger to the general public please contact the police.

Stolen Horses

Tethering

If you are concerned about horses tethered on Council land please contact the local council and encourage other concerned residents to do the same.  Further information on tethering can be found at http://www.newc.co.uk/codes/Tethering.php

Ragwort concerns

The control of ragwort in fields comes under two Government Acts, which gives Government authorities the power to serve clearance notices to the owners of infested land.

If appropriate, the first step would be to approach the land owner to ask them to clear the land.  If this does not resolve the problem, a Weed Complaint form should be completed available from DEFRA at:
http://www.defra.gov.uk/rural/horses/topics/ragwort.htm

Tel: 0117 959 8622

For ragwort growing on road verges contact the Highways Agency http://www.highways.gov.uk

For ragwort growing on railway verges contact Network Rail on                   08457 11 41 41 or http://www.networkrail.co.uk
